Anything wood on the toys is handmade in Van Ermen’s work spaces at his Green Bay home. I try to use all hardwoods Van Ermen says. I have oak, maple, purple heart, yellow heart, some zebra wood, walnut, some teak. He picks woods for colors, placing what looks best on an area of the toy and applying a clear coating. Van Ermen recycles wood scraps he’s found or been given. I make small pieces out that are not very thick, he says. No matter what, if it’s got bad spots on it, I’ll find some way to get a good piece out of it. Really, nothing goes to waste.
