The Little Wooden Toy Shop is a home-based business, which was started to offer wholesome and simple alternatives in promoting healthy, educational play among our children and within our families. All of the products we sell are made from 100% natural materials, including wood, cotton, wool and silk.  A great percentage of the wood used to make many of these toys is harvested directly from the areas where the toys are made.  Where possible, fabrics are organic and 100% washable. All finishes and dyes are 100% non-toxic and safe for our children and our animals. A concerted effort has been made to purchase all of our toys and playthings from small family-run businesses and environmentally conscious farmers and homesteaders throughout the United States and Canada.  All of these products have been lovingly handmade by talented crafts people and tradesmen schooled in the art of old-fashioned toy making. The Highland Woodworking store started out as Highland Hardware an ordinary hardware store in downtown Atlanta in 1978. It was founded by a young couple who met at Georgia Tech, and after graduating and getting married, went to work together for an old Atlanta company known as King Hardware (which had the distinction in 1886 of selling to the druggist next door the washtub used to mix the first batch of Coca-Cola). After a four year bootstrap education in the tool and hardware business at King, the couple took out an SBA loan, rented a storefront near their home and cast their bread upon entrepreneurial waters. Good fortune in the form of loyal customers and bright, hardworking sales people led to a prospering business which soon identified itself as a specialist in woodworking tools, hand tools and supplies. Always committed to quality and value, Highland Hardware built a reputation as a source of reliable advice on the purchase and use of the tools it sold. Part of Highland Hardware’s mission over the years has been to fan the flames of interest and excitement in the craft of woodworking, and contribute to its growth throughout the country. Read More.

Jenn McKee, AnnArbor.com: I’ll admit that I have a soft spot for well-crafted, wooden toys, so Russell Fullone’s booth on State Street, a booth that is part of the Summer Art Fair, made me stop and stare a couple of times. Fullone makes old model fire engines, trucks  that sometimes are carrying small barrels or crayons, cars, golf carts, and more. The toys that more obviously are appealing to an adult audience have a small clock built inside. Here’s Fullone, who hails from Hamburg, New York, talking briefly about how he began making his toys and why he focuses on older model vehicles.

Fundamentall Toys says: A “good toy” is said to be 10% toy and 90% child. While many toys peak a child’s interest, those that hold their attention are few and far between. Those are the types of toys we focus on. To us toys are not frivolous playthings, they are basic learning tools that teach children everything from mathematics to social skills. They are baby-sitters and playmates, and we understand that a child’s favorite toy often becomes a trusted friend. While playing should always be FUN, it must also be taken seriously. Children are building a variety of skills, talents and abilities as they play. Their playthings should enrich and enhance their development. We keep this in mind as we select items for our store. Our selections blend creative development with entertainment value. We avoid items that display gender stereotypes, those that promote aggressive or violent play, and those that make a child a spectator rather than a participant. Read More.
